L’Orchidée D’Hawaï - Śmierć Ministra (which means Death of the Minister)

I saw this band two nights ago at the Kimya Dawson show. These guys caught my attention immediately with their mix of eastern european gypsy/klezmer melodies and 60’s garage/surf rock rhythms (although they are from, or at least live in France). They sing in a bunch of different languages on their album, including Polish, Italian, Spanish and Russian. This one is in Polish.

The drummer was so amazing to watch. He switched up the beats like it was nothing. If you go to their myspace page, you can download a bunch of their songs FOR FREE! Definitely check out Black Sand Beach, which is really surf-rock sounding, and Angelare which has great harmonies.

If you are going to see Kimya Dawson in the near future, get there early to check out these guys live! They are great!

This is an interesting, and rather odd, combination.
I think I can safely say I’ve heard more Polish singing than any other non-Polish person my age, thanks again to good ol’ WSNJ and their Saturday hours-long “Polka Time” show, which I’ve heard playing ever since I was a little kid sleeping over at my grandparents’ house on Friday nights.

I’ve never heard Polish surf rock, however…
