I found this on a government website a while back.  It’s from the teens, I think.I really like sepia tone.

L’Orchidée D’Hawaï - Śmierć Ministra (which means Death of the Minister)

I saw this band two nights ago at the Kimya Dawson show. These guys caught my attention immediately with their mix of eastern european gypsy/klezmer melodies and 60’s garage/surf rock rhythms (although they are from, or at least live in France). They sing in a bunch of different languages on their album, including Polish, Italian, Spanish and Russian. This one is in Polish.

The drummer was so amazing to watch. He switched up the beats like it was nothing. If you go to their myspace page, you can download a bunch of their songs FOR FREE! Definitely check out Black Sand Beach, which is really surf-rock sounding, and Angelare which has great harmonies.

If you are going to see Kimya Dawson in the near future, get there early to check out these guys live! They are great!

This is an interesting, and rather odd, combination.
I think I can safely say I’ve heard more Polish singing than any other non-Polish person my age, thanks again to good ol’ WSNJ and their Saturday hours-long “Polka Time” show, which I’ve heard playing ever since I was a little kid sleeping over at my grandparents’ house on Friday nights.

I’ve never heard Polish surf rock, however…

I’m in my heart attack years! Do what I say!

Packin' it in

It’s weird throwing out a bunch of random stuff you’ve been accumulating for two years “in case you need it later.”

Also, think of something happening which is moderately dangerous and really annoying to clean up.  Got it?  Mine would be spilling pushpins all over the floor.

Oh, I just did that, by the way.  Those little fellers really scurry everywhere, don’t they?

Dictionary.com is so darn scholarly sometimes.
That doesn’t always translate smoothly into what they’re defining.

put one’s money where one’s mouth is, Informal.
to prove the truth of one’s words by actions or other evidence; demonstrate one’s sincerity or integrity: “Instead of bragging about your beautiful house, put your money where your mouth is and invite us over to see it.”

Awkward?  (Just like the word, “awkward”?)

I’m hoping to have a lot of kids some day and they’ll be homeschooled.

I might not have said that years ago, but since that time I’ve met some of the greatest and most well-rounded people ever who came from the aforementioned scenario.

This video (all in good fun… right guys? right??) reminded me of some bonuses of that whole setup.

(I will try to prophylactically counsel my sons against wearing black socks with shorts, btw.)
Ah, Schlitz. My family’s TV is literally this big during the summer since the only decent TV around is at the shore house for the renters when it’s warm.
Needless to say, I’ll be loaning/giving them my big ol’ CRT set when I’m on rotations for two years. :-p [via]

This is my favorite song by the Inkspots,
their rendition of “Java Jive” from 1940.

WSNJ used to use the Manhattan Transfer version for an ad they played incessantly for the coffee shop downtown.
